In the Afterglow: Skin-Soothing, Hair-Saving Tips For Post-Sun Days

afterglow: skin and hair saving post-sun tips

Love: A day in the sun with beloved family and friends, drinking, eating and laughing the day away.

Loathe: The dried-out, broken-out, inflamed, splotchy, sunspot-ridden aftermath.

Enjoy the sun. Just be sure to cool down, soothe skin and hair, and keep your beauty look simple and gleaming afterwards. Some tips for doing just that.

COOL DOWN: High skin temps can contribute to inflammation and hyperpigmentation. So spritz on a cooling, antioxidant-rich mist, and lower temps with treatments made just for that purpose.

Skin Inc. Pure Serum Mist, $55: With mineral-rich Japanese onsen water and hyaluronic acid molecules five times smaller to help penetrate the epidermis, this serum mist cools skin on contact and can even be used to set makeup. Spritz on liberally to keep skin temps down.

Pixi by Petra 24K Eye Elixir, $22: Heat and UV damage can lead to inflammation and puffiness. Take it down a notch with a cooling metal rollerball to help depuff the eye area before dinner. Peptides and raspberry and cucumber extracts help plump and tone.

Patchology Lip Renewal FlashPatch 5 Minute Hydrogels, $50: Lips often get ignored when it comes to sun protection, and after a day of sun and wind, your pout may need some serious pampering. Just wear one of these adorable hydrogel lip masks, juiced with niacinamide, peptides and green tea extract, to plump and hydrate your lips back into kissable shape.

Talika Bio Enzymes Mask—After Sun, $13.75: Used in Asia to aid healing after surgery, biocellulose is a natural nanofiber that is biocompatible with skin. Talika uses biocellulose in its sheet mask to soothe and hydrate sun-weary skin with hyaluronic acid and antioxidant alpine herb extracts.

SOOTHE YOUR SKIN: After UV and pollution exposure, your skin is dehydrated and free radicals are running amok. Slather on some hydrating oils and antioxidant-laden moisturizers.

Éminence Rosehip & Lemongrass Repair Balm, $74: A cooling lotion for face and body perfect for post-sun. Rosehip oil calms red, irritated skin, anti-inflammatory lemongrass refreshes, vitamin-rich sunflower oil soothes, and antioxidant botanicals like edelweiss extract help neutralize free radical damage incurred by exposure to sun and pollution.

Elcie The Glow Enhancer, $48: This lightweight, shimmering dry oil not only protects with antioxidants, jojoba oil helps balance sebum production, while rose hip oil nourishes with fatty acids and vitamin E. Plus, its subtly shimmering minerals impart a luxurious après-sun glow you can apply all over, even your hair.

Colorscience Skin Calming Face Primer SPF 20, $49: Got burned anyway? Apply this primer to help neutralize redness. It’s made for post-procedure skin, but it also helps when you’re sun-damaged or sensitive. Antioxidant-rich cactus extract and green tea extract help fight free radical damage incurred by exposure to UV rays.

Phyto Phytoplage Sublime After Sun Hair & Body Oil, $40: Spritz this 98% natural oil liberally on hair and body after exposure to the sun for a soothing treatment. A host of unique reparative oils — like perilla, Brazilian buriti, annatto, and camellia — replenishes moisture loss in skin and hair. And you won’t need a perfume — its fresh, sweet scent provides instant fragrance.

STAY GOLDEN: Whether an old fashioned tan (not recommended, of course) or a DIY self-tan, keep your color longer with these glow extenders.

Vita Liberata pHenomenal 2-3 Week Tan Mousse & Tanning Mitt Duo, $84: The more you’re in the water, the quicker your self-tanner will fade, says Alyssa Hilliard, esthetician and tanning expert of Versa Spa. Saturate your skin for a longer faux glow by using self-tanners regularly and at least two weeks before a vacation. Vita Liberata’s mousse self-tanner is formulated to last four times longer than your typical self-tanner, with zero smell and 72 hours worth of hydration.

Dermasuri Deep Exfoliating Mitt, $19.99: As counterintuitive as it may sound, exfoliating regularly after you self-tan helps keep your color for longer. As you scrub away flaky dead skin cells, which can make you look blotchy, you reveal the color underneath. Keep your glow longer with this easy-to-use mitt, inspired by Korean, Japanese and Turkish exfoliation at bathhouses and hammams.

Per-fékt Liquid Gold Illuminating Perfector, $28.50: If you prefer a wash-off glow, this blurring gel might be for you. Ultra-fine, light-reflecting pearls impart a nice gleam, and you can use it on your face, body or even as a leave-in conditioner for hair. Bonus: Plant extracts and caffeine firm and tighten, while sunflower and avocado oils hydrate.

Enlite Flawless Body Body a Glow Glow, $21.99:The more skin you show, the more you need to keep it in tip-top shape. A retexturizing treatment, like this one with glycolic and lactic acids, help speeds skin cell turnover, while an antioxidant complex fights free radical damage incurred from a day in the sun. A very subtle bronze mica adds a hint of sheen, perfect for those who don’t like that self-tanner look.

KEEP MAKEUP SIMPLE: Because seriously, who wants to cake on makeup after a glorious romp in nature? Besides, your skin will be glowing and your eyes shiny from all the endorphins.

W3LL People Narcissist Foundation Stick, $28.99: A complex beauty routine is the last thing you want after a day in the sun. A few strategic swipes of this good-for-you (read: no nasties) stick foundation is all you need.

Chosungah 22 24H Raybeam Cream, $28: After a day outdoors, your cheeks are flushed, your eyes shining. Enhance your natural glow with a bit of strategic strobing. Dab on a cream highlighter on top of cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, in the inner corners of your eyes, and on the cupid’s bow, and you’re ready to go.

M.A.C Tendertalk Lip Balm, $24: The final touch is a swipe of color — no mess, no fuss. This smart lip conditioner creates a personalized tint on your lips, all while moisturizing and nourishing.

TREAT YOUR TRESSES: Sun, salt and wind are punishing to your hair (even if they do leave your tresses gloriously tousled). Be kind to them in the aftermath with some strand love.

Joico CO+Wash_Color, $23.99: You spent a lot of time in the salon for that color. Don’t let it go to waste by using the wrong hair products. This breakthrough, sulfate-free “whipped cream” conditioner gives you three times the color protection with half the product. Argan oil, the amino acid arginine, and a keratin silicone blend keep your color intact until your next salon visit.

Blndn Tone You Toning Rinse, $42: If you prefer your own shampoo or just want an extra boost, a toning rinse helps to shut down the brassiness. This one also contains antioxidant camellia leaf extract and pomegranate seed oil to nourish hair, as well as murumuru butter for luster and baobab seed protein to strengthen strands.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5-in-1 Styling Treatment, $27: There’s some serious science behind everything Living Proof creates, and this strengthening, smoothing treatment is no exception. It’s sulfate-, silicone- and oil-free and helps keep your style longer, allowing you to wash your hair less often. Just apply on damp hair after a long day in the sun, and air dry for a naturally textured yet smooth look.
