That Instagram Beauty Trend of Overlining the Lips? Now I Get It

When I heard about the latest beauty trend taking Instagram by storm, I thought, meh. After all, isn’t overlining just lining the lips a bit outside of your natural lip line to make them look fuller? Yeah, makeup artists have been trying to do that on me since the ’90s. And it’s not a good look. Move on.

Until I went to a press event for Milani Cosmetics last week. They were launching their new Amore Matte Lip Crémes and Amore Mattallics Lip Crémes, and makeup artist @taniamariamua created this transformation on me using Milani Amore Matte Lip Créme in Fling:

I think it looks fairly realistic (like if you didn’t know me, you wouldn’t think I went overboard with the lip liner), but to really see what a difference overlining makes, check out my lips before and after:

I was amazed at how overlining my lips and filling them in with a matte lipstick really made a difference in how I looked and even felt. Sure, I felt super glam — perhaps too glam for everyday — but it’s definitely a look I would wear for dressier occasions and photo ops. I never imagined that I could pull off full lips, but I found that I actually liked the final result, and I felt like my newfound lush lips balanced out my facial proportions better. (The blue-based plum also made my teeth look whiter — an instant anti-ager!)

Even better was the Milani Amore Matte Lip Créme itself. Not only did it last all day, through eating and drinking no less, but my lips didn’t. Dry. Out. Now, you have to understand, my lips are super, super dry and chapped all year-round. I can’t go an hour without having to apply something on my lips, whether a balm or gloss. I’m the one applying lipgloss while trekking for hours up a dormant volcano in the Philippines, where we’d camp overnight with no toilet facilities, and trust me, it was not because I was vain — my lips were drying out. (And by drying, I mean, if I don’t put something on them, they’d start peeling and eventually cracking and bleeding.)

So I thought for sure I’d never be able to pull off the matte lip trend with my lips flaking every few hours. But with this Lip Créme on, for some reason, my lips didn’t dry out or flake for the rest of the day. It was the strangest thing — almost as if the Lip Créme served as a seal over my lips, trapping in the moisture.

Whatever it was, consider me addicted. I’ll be wearing these Amore Matte Lip Crémes all summer long. (We’ll see if I can get this overlining thing right. Guess I’ll be practicing a lot!) And since Milani sent me home with every shade of the Lip Créme, you better believe I’ll be experimenting like crazy.

Of course, even if they didn’t give me every shade, this is one makeup product I’d go out and buy. I mean, why not? It’s crazy affordable at only $7.99 at Walgreens. (All the colors are available at Milani.)

So what do you think? Do you think this is a trend you’d try on yourself?
